Introduction
Colvin Design 103 is one of the most popular cruising boats of all time and probably the most famous design to come from the desk of US naval architect Thomas E Colvin. The first one built was by the designer himself for his own personal use and was named Gazelle - hence the design is commonly known as GAZELLE. Subsequently many hundreds have been launched. By far the most common rig fitted is the Colvin designed junk rig but there is the option to fit a gaff rig.
The Gazelle design is fast and easily handled and an ideal vessel for many circumstances - whether it's day-sailing, week-ending or extended voyaging, in the backwaters or on the open sea, Gazelle is a good choice.
The Gazelle design was chosen by the
Malabar Yacht Club as the boat to start commercial yachting in India - and the Malabar Yacht Club's gazelle
ROSA was the first yacht ever to be registered in India - she is Indian Merchant Marine, registered with DG Shipping India, registration number CHN002.
The Malabar Yacht Club - after 3 seasons of running Gazelles and critically examining the design options and layouts - have decided on the best "gazelle" for their purposes. The MYC gazelle specification will be referred to as SACHIYO - after the first one to be launched.
